The inner ear – deafness and hyperacusis - TEAS

First author and date Rostovtsev VN 1992
Version consulted C
Condition sensorineural hearing loss (stages II and III), tinnitus
Study type case series
N / Groupings 62
Type of acupuncture TEAS
Points used biologically active points around ear (active electrode), back of head (passive electrode)
Parameters used 100 Hz-10 kHz, 100-800 μA, 5-20 V, 0.2-0.02 msec, automatic polarity change [device ‘ES-50-1’]
Stimulation duration 40-60 mins
Number of sessions 10-12 sessions
Follow up 2-12 mths
Endpoint measure tinnitus, hearing
Outcome disappearance of tinnitus, better hearing (10-15 dB shifts in auditory thresholds) achieved in 32.3% of patients; tinnitus reduced, hearing improved subjectively in 40.3% of patients; 27.4% of patients did not respond to TEAS
Additional notes TEAS is recommended as a method of choice in combined treatment of neurosensory hypoacusis and tinnitus
