Parameters used (a) auricular points with 6 ms decaying square pulse and return spike ~41 hz; (2) turn up v slowly with probe tip touching saline, till just perceptible; (3) 1.6 Hz 180 ms decaying biphasic spikes [Acu-Sense AS-3, Bio-Instrumentation, Inc, Goleta, CA]
Stimulation duration low intensity, 1 min (in canal saline) or till ear feels ‘hot’; then stronger LF till lip twitches, then intermittent until patient reports salty or metallic taste (or ‘bubbling sensation’ in mouth)
