Hip - EA |
First author and date | Rastogi S 2002 |
Version consulted | C |
Condition | avascular necrosis of hip (3 mths) |
Study type | case report |
N / Groupings | 1 (55 yrs old, unresponsive to NSAIDs and muscle relaxants) |
Type of acupuncture | MA + EA |
Points used | (1) local ashi, ipsilat BL-40 and HE-6 [EA to ashi points]; (2) most tender ashi, with 4 surrounding needles directed at centre of pain [EA] |
Parameters used | (1) 5 Hz initially, then 10 Hz in further sessions, 3 V max (to tolerance) (via 30 mm needles); (2) 50 mm needle at central ashi point |
Stimulation duration | 20 mins |
Number of sessions | 2 daily sessions with protocol 1, then 5 sessions with protocol 2 (2/wk); a further 4 sessions with protocol 2 at follow up (2/wk) |
Follow up | 3 mths |
Endpoint measure | X-ray |
Outcome | initial X-ray showed reduced bone density l hip, with small lesion over lower border l ileum, possibly necrotic; after 2 sessions (protocol 1), no change; ‘remarkably good’ response to protocol 2, with no pain after 1 treatment, tenderness markedly reduced and joint mobility improved, as well as weight bearing and ability to lie on back; pain completely relieved after 5 sessions (protocol 2), with complete restoration of joint mobility; at follow up, a little ‘heaviness’ reported over affected part, especially after prolonged sitting; after sessions at 1 mth follow up, no further symptoms at 3 mth follow up; follow up X-ray showed minimal changes at lesion site, suggesting possible improved vascularisation. |
Additional notes | acupuncture may possibly enhance osteogenesis and neovascularisation |
